Moving from AZ to the Pacific Northwest by Mary Johnson
Sun Does Not Mean Warmth
I used to see the sun and equate it to living on the face of it and dressing as minimally as possible. Needless to say my first winter here was pretty gruesome.
Trust
I have learned to never trust the weatherman, period.
Driving
It’s surprising to see how many people don’t know how to drive in the rain up here. Even more surprising to see how they drive even worse on sunny days.
Layers
It’s imperative to dress in layers. People carry backpacks for a reason, it’s like an adult diaper bag for that extra layer of clothing.
Sucker Holes
Those little patches of blue sky in the midst of an otherwise overcast day. Do not be fooled. There’s a reason why they’re called sucker holes.
Coffee
Coffee isn’t just for hangover mornings afternoons. In fact, if I couldn’t cross the street to get a steaming cup of joe made by somebody else whenever I wanted I’d probably be kinda bummed.
Weather
There is no such thing as bad weather, just having the wrong clothing.
Dressing
Like my closet threw up on me is fun, and nobody seems to care.
Jeans
I’ve learned that wearing jeans year round is acceptable and bearable since summers don’t get up to 115. This as also conductive to me wearing my Doc Martins as well.
Tattoos have been an art form since ancient times, practiced by many cultures across the globe. Ink has even been found on a 5,000-year-old mummy in the Alps. Over the last few decades, tattoos have evolved from crude dedications to “Mom” to being featured on the walls of renowned art museums.

2nd Annual Lake Havasu Balloon fest: This Year’s Balloon Festival had a record attendance, probably the biggest event ever in Lake Havasu City. It is now the largest January Hot Air Balloon event in the nation. Nearly 700 volunteers, organized by the Rotary Clubs and London Bridge Lions Club, staffed the 4 day event. The flying weather was perfect on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Saturday was too breezy for the balloons, but the festival events were still well attended. Final Balloon Fest Accounting is still pending, but it will surely result in well over $100,000 of funds to be donated to local charities.
