Killer Hair To Fall In Love With

Posted on March 6, 2012 by admin in Health & Beauty

Hair Care

Unmanageable, unruly, and bent-out-of-shape: I’m not talking a sugared – up six year old or a hard-headed boss; I’m talking women’s hair. For two years, since I made my departure from Long Beach, California to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, I’ve noticed how women’s hair is literally dying in this dry heat. I noticed hair was more damaged, broken, and frizzy from the lack of moisture in our air. I have the same problem myself; the climate here is killing our hair! Killer hair can be refined by one simple solution: GKhair (Global Keratin) Hair Taming System. GKhair Hair Taming System is made to help your hair withstand the dry-cold-winters to the dry-hot-heat. And, it lasts up to 5 months in your hair—that’s almost half a year.

After researching and trying different products, GKhair Hair Taming System, which is an internationally recognized product of excellence, can offer you beautiful, healthy hair without all the harsh and abrasive chemicals. It will truly make you fall in love with your hair again. GKhair Hair Taming System is the first and only company, since its inception in 2006, to harness the beauty benefits of an ingredient called Juvexin. This Juvexin is a rich blend of proteins derived from New Zealand’s sheep wool. Juvexin bonds with the hair, penetrating each hair shaft. The product also improves the softness and the lubricity of the hair, enabling the hair to better withstand heat. It then continues working by making the hair stronger by reducing breakage, frizz, and restoring shine. The manageability of your hair styling time is cut in half. You will no longer need to flat iron your hair to death to get the results GKhair Hair Taming System can give to you. GKhair Hair Taming System is not a permanent relaxer (meaning there are no hard chemicals such as amino acid, sodium hydroxides, nothio, or ATG which are harmful to your hair). It’s good for all hair types, including fine, coarse, colored, bleached, and virgin hair.

Healthy hair is important. Think about it—if long-term exposure to the Havasuian sun can peel the paint off a car and an egg can be fried “road-side” during our record heats; you are definitely frying your hair. We invite you to come in or call our friendly hair care center where you can find GKhair Hair Taming System products exclusively at our store. I will personally give you a free consultation.

Radiant Salon and Day Spa:

A native of Los Angeles, Tina Scott made Havasu her home over 11 years ago – not intending to open a salon, after many years as a stylist in California. Now, she owns one of the largest Day Spas in Lake Havasu. Maybe it’s something in the water, but Havasu seems to bring out the best of talents in people, allowing them to make a living, while excelling at something they love doing.

The first time you step into Radiant Salon and Day Spa, it’s easy to see that owner Tina Scott has poured her entire heart and soul, and her essence, into the two story salon. At first it seems out of the way, but in reality it’s close enough, centrally located off McCulloch and Jamaica Blvd. A true hidden gem radiating comfort and warmth from the moment you enter this seemingly misplaced sanctuary, your personal transformation begins.

Mainstream services include Hair Design, Nail and Skin Care, Massage and Permanent Cosmetics, but the non-typical services are the real secret to their success – their holistic approach includes alternative therapies, including Ayurvedic treatments, Hypnosis, Energy work (Reiki), Chakra balancing, and very soon, Acupuncture. Upstairs, you can sit and relax in the very comfortable main relaxation room before entering one of the adjoining Therapy rooms. They even have a couples room where you and your partner or friend can receive a treatment together.

Global Signature Spa packages, such as The French Riviera, The Mayan, Emerald Isle Escape, and Down Under, plus others, guarantee a full immersion into an exotic journey of relaxation – a Vacation for the Body, Mind and Spirit! A good introduction into the alternative therapies, is the 2 ½ hour Mind, Body and Spirit Package ($150), which is designed to clear the mind, open the heart, and restore energy flow into balance.

Locally owned and operated since 2001 and boasting over 23 years experience in the industry, Tina and her staff guarantee an experience that will keep you looking great and feeling healthy! Or as they say … “When you look and feel your best … YOU ARE RADIANT!”

Under The Influence

Influence

The glamorous ladies of Sex and the City prefer cosmopolitans, James Bond wants his martini shaken and not stirred, and the bride and groom are toasted with champagne. Alcohol is a part of American culture and is often a part of holiday celebrations, such as St. Patrick’s Day. Who has not had a green beer to celebrate?

How does alcohol affect a person?
Alcohol is absorbed in the stomach and small intestines into the bloodstream. It is broken down by substances in the liver in a really slow process (about one drink per hour) leaving the majority of the alcohol to circulate through the body. Alcohol causes dizziness, talkativeness, slurred speech, impaired judgment and coordination, and memory loss. In large quantities, it can also cause nausea, vomiting, coma, and death.

Why does alcohol affect people differently?
Alcohol affects people differently and is influenced by a variety of factors such as: age, gender, race, weight, fitness level, food consumed, how quickly the alcohol was consumed, use of drugs or prescription medications, and family or previous history of alcohol problems.

What are the health benefits of moderate alcohol use?
When consumed in moderation, alcohol can have health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, gallstones, and diabetes. Moderation is defined as one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men. Drinking in excess can have the opposite effects. This is not a case where the more, the merrier.

What is a “hangover?”
A hangover is the unfortunate morning after-effect of drinking excessively. Symptoms include irritability, decreased concentration, anxiety, sensitivity to light and sound, sweating, headache, nausea, thirst, dizziness, vertigo, shakiness, rapid heartbeat, and fatigue. There are many factors that contribute to these symptoms including dehydration as alcohol is a diuretic. Also, alcohol triggers an inflammatory response, irritates the stomach lining, causes blood vessels to expand, causes blood sugar to fall, and is a depressant.

How do you treat a “hangover?”
Time is the only true cure for a hangover. However, there are things to help make it more comfortable in the meantime. Drink a lot of water or fruit juice and have a snack. Dry carbohydrates such as toast or crackers may boost blood sugar and settle the stomach. Soup can help replenish lost salt and potassium. Foods and drinks with sugar (fructose) may help to burn the alcohol faster. A low dose of an over-the-counter pain medication may help with the headache.  However, pain relievers containing aspirin may irritate the stomach and those containing acetaminophen (Tylenol) may damage the liver if combined with large amounts of alcohol. Vitamins B and C have been thought to also help the symptoms. It may also help to eat first, take it slowly, choose alcohols with fewer congeners such as vodka or gin, and drink water between drinks.

What about greasy food or the “hair of the dog?”
Eating the big, greasy breakfast (or lunch by the time you wake up) does not really ease the hangover. As for the “hair of the dog,” it may slightly numb the pain but it is only really prolonging the inevitable. So, the moral of the story is if you have too much alcohol tonight, you will probably pay for it tomorrow! Make sure you stock up on water and crackers!

Waldo’s BBQ

Posted on March 6, 2012 by admin in A Taste Of Havasu

Waldos

The first thing you’ll notice as you drive up to Waldo’s BBQ is the aroma of ribs being smoked on an outside smoker. Once inside, you’ll be overwhelmed by the spectacular view of the airport, taxiway, and scenic desert vista as you relax on the oversized couches, while snacking on your favorite appetizer. In fact, it’s not uncommon to watch a plane land, and then taxi right up to Waldo’s to fly-in for a mouth-watering pork pulled sandwich complete with Waldo’s homemade sweet or hot sauces!

Waldo’s BBQ first opened in Mesa, Arizona in the winter of 1993. Clay Caldwell, a family pig farmer from Snowflake, came up with the idea for Waldo’s (hey, you have to do something with all of those pigs!) and partnered with Frank Estadt in the spring of 2005. Branching out, the pig-duo have opened other locations in Arizona, including the airport location in Lake Havasu City.

Waldos

Ashley Huff, a Havasu native, serves as the general manager for the local Waldo’s after beginning her relationship with Waldo’s as a supplier of firewood for their smokers. Ashley pointed out that their most popular dishes are the pulled pork and baby back ribs, followed closely by their catfish prepared to your taste. Most of the smoked meats cook a full 15-20 hours; if the mesquite smoked meats smell great when you’re there, then plan to stop back tomorrow when they’ll be serving the fall-off-the-bone meats that have been cooking all night!

A full bar features half-off drinks daily from 3-7 p.m. And the hearty portions combined with the endless side dishes guarantees that you won’t leave hungry! Call ahead for larger groups and remember, Waldo’s BBQ provides quality catering services!

Open 10:30 am – 9 pm Friday & Saturday — 10:30 am – 8 pm Sunday-Thursday.

The Gin Mill
Next to Darleen’s Tea Room.

Darleen’s Tea Room is opening a full bar next door to their current location which will be called “The Gin Mill”. It will have a comfortable jazzy feel with high top tables. Food service will be available from Darleen’s and will include items off of the current menu including tasty tapas. Look for it to open this March.

Schlotzskys

NEW FULL BAR at Schlotskys?

Schlotzsky’s is turning the meeting – banquet room just to the right as you walk in the front door, into an upscale bar called “Lotz on the Rocks”. Another great attraction for uptown Havasu!

WHAT HAPPENED TO Someplace Special?

What was one of our favorite lunch spots closed during the Holidays. Owners Sean and Anna Bowe closed the restaurant part of the business so that they could concentrate on their growing baking business, supplying breads, rolls, buns and other baked goods to discerning restaurants here in Havasu. I know that when I have a special sandwich or burger planned that’s where I go to get my rolls. Well the good news is that Mark Roach will be opening the restaurant back up with a revamped menu featuring some of the local favorites from before along with some fresh new ideas. We wish them well and look forward to the re-opening in March.

Grilled Corned Beef?

Posted on March 5, 2012 by admin in A Taste Of Havasu

Corned Beef?

So, why would you want to grill a corned beef? You’ll add a lot more flavor to the meat than simply boiling it will. Also, you get a piece of brisket that isn’t boiled mush. Grilled corned beef is denser and has a much better texture. The first step in grilling your corned beef is to soak the beef for about 30 minutes per pound and no less than 2 hours. This soaking will need to be done with warm water or the salt will not dissolve effectively. You may choose to place the corned beef in a pot of water and set it on your stove over a low heat (about 140°f) for the soaking time. You also need to change the water every hour and rinse the corned beef off when you change the water. Save the last batch of water to boil your cabbage and potatoes. (Use some of the drippings from the grilling to add extra flavor). Let the corned beef cool to at least room temperature before grilling. With the corned beef soaked and rinsed, you can apply the seasonings.

Grill

Corned beef is sold with a spice packet. You can use it or mix up a rub of your own. Use coarsely cracked black pepper, cracked coriander seeds, onion powder, thyme, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne. You can save yourself the time and just use John Henry’s™ Mohave Garlic Pepper Gold. You’ll want to grill your corned beef for about 1 to 2 hours at a low temperature (about 250°f). Charcoal and hardwoods will give you better flavors but you can use a gas grill. I prefer using the Big Green Egg for this St. Patrick’s Day favorite. Regardless, use the indirect grilling method and a drip pan under the corned beef. Grill until the internal temperature of the meat reaches more than 165°f. While grilling you want to MOP the corned beef every 30 minutes. Use some of the rub you prepared with equal parts of water, oil and vinegar to makes something similar to a salad dressing. This will keep the meat moist and also help drain out any additional salt left behind. By mopping with seasonings from the rub you continue to add that great flavor to the corned beef. If you introduce some smoke to the process you’ll add even more flavor.

EAT MY DUST

Havasu off-road racer Keith Waibel doesn’t know the meaning of ‘second place’

Eat My Dust

LAKE HAVASU CITY — With all that goes into getting a car and driver ready, just finishing a first race is usually cause for celebration. For Class 3000 driver Keith Waibel, however, there’s been almost no dust on the menu since Day 1. The 48-year-old owner of Hy-Tech repair in Lake Havasu was introduced to racing by his co-driver, Jeff Vetter. “Moving from Florida, I didn’t really know how it worked,” said Waibel, who has lived in Havasu for 10 years. “After going to watch the Parker 425 every year for five years, I was very interested.”. Waibel started off with a play car, spending a year honing his skills. He moved up to a car that “needed a lot of work to get it ready” but after six months of testing, it was ready for a pro course.

Class 3000, also known as Desert Lites, is a fast-growing class. Cars and trucks have a limited wheel base, unlimited suspension and an Ecotec 2.2 liter or 2.4 liter powerhouse capable of speeds around 100 mph. In 2010, Weibel debuted at Best in the Desert’s Blue Water Challenge in Parker. After winning the two-day race, he was hooked. He kicked off the 2011 BITD season with the far more challenging Parker 425 — and won again. “So, I was like ‘Hey, let’s do the series and see if we can take it all,’ ” Waibel said. The only 2011 race his team didn’t finish was the Silver State 300. “Forty miles from the finish and in first place — with the second place guy over three hours behind us — we broke a 30-cent bolt in our clutch that put us on the trailer for the day,” he said. “I learn something from every race. We found a weak link, but with the help of my buddy Jason (Morgan) at Morphic (Industries in Lake Havasu), we solved the problem.” Shaking off the DNF at Silver State, Waibel won Vegas To Reno, a 560-mile test of endurance and “everything a desert can throw at you.” He took the series with a season-ending win at the Henderson 250, and the team was ready to hit the ground running in 2012. They started off last month’s Parker 425 in first place, but a flat at Mile 5 put them at the back of the pack. Waibel said he was ready to call it quits after another flat at Mile 112 and a blown header gasket.”We had more problems on the first lap than the whole last season,” he said. With the help of team leader Tim Kraus and Vetter, however, everything got fixed and they ran down the class in the second lap for the win. Waibel’s team is preparing for the Mint 400, March 23-25 just outside Las Vegas. He expects to see a lot of competition, with more than 20 expected to enter his class.

He also builds and preps cars for other racers, and saw a 2011 Baja 1000 win with one of his cars. But when it comes to racing, he only competes in BITD. “(BITD owner) Casey Folks runs a great series and has had nothing but a perfect track record with the BLM,” Waibel said.

“I would also like to thank all my customers that come to Hy-Tech repair for service on their desert and water toys. Without them, I could never race off-road.”
