Art Fusion Experiment

Ink Artist

EverythingTattoos have been an art form since ancient times, practiced by many cultures across the globe. Ink has even been found on a 5,000-year-old mummy in the Alps. Over the last few decades, tattoos have evolved from crude dedications to “Mom” to being featured on the walls of renowned art museums.

Tighter health regulations, better technology and pigments also have allowed ink artists to create more intricate and striking designs, showing off their skills as fine artists. Many tattoo artists hold fine arts degrees or have spent years studying illustration and drawing. These skills allow artists to create stunning custom artwork that also tells a story, including lifelike portraits and vibrant whole-body tattoos. Back-alley tattoo parlors have been replaced with tattoo studios occupying high-end retail areas, catering to celebrities and others who can afford the best work money can

buy. Tattoo artistry also has receivedmainstream recognition, appearing as museum exhibits and with major national conventions dedicated to the craft. “Skin,” a documentary released late last year, explores tattoos as fine art.

Since 2001, a project called the Art Fusion Experiment has featured internationally renowned tattoo artists creating collaborative works of art on paper and canvas. The work is auctioned off and proceeds benefit local charities that support the arts.

TOP 5 Highest Grossing UNDESERVING

#1 HARRY POTTER 7 PART 2: Gross $1.3 billion
Wow what a lame ending! Did the art of storytelling become completely replaced by digital animation and graphics? In her massive hurry to trample the lines at the bank, the writer must have forgotten the entire basis and background of what the boy wizard was supposed to become. I just saw the movie yesterday and have already forgotten what happened. All I remember, is there was lots of fire and lightning.

Smurfs

#2 The Smurfs: Gross $562.4 million Surprise!
You’re now rich, over a piece of junk. This movie only brought in what it did due to the fact that so many called the show a childhood favorite. The lame production made the characters resemble very little of the original show and the plot was just all around LAME! Let’s not mention all of the advertising plugs crammed into this movie. I think the producers knew it was going to suck so bad they had to make a buck somewhere.

#3 THOR: Gross $448.5 million
In an attempt to make an Avengers movie, a string of comic based movies were put out to introduce characters, and build up to this comic fans wet dream of a movie. Most of these Movies were good…I said most. Thor is a boring movie that was completely rushed and under thought just to get it out of the way. But, of course, this movie brought in a ton of money. You can slap Marvel on the front of a bus and mow through millions of these brainwashed Comic Con followers.

Undeserving

#4 BRIDES MAIDS: Gross $288.4 million This movie is constantly being This movie is constantly being called “The Hangover” for women. Just this thought alone could give me one wicked hangover. Bridesmaid is nothing but a typical chick flicks with a few parts thrown in that are more disgusting than funny. If you add a few more parts that start out funny
but quickly become awkward and overbearing you will have this massively over-hyped Hollywood disaster.

#5 PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3: Gross $104 million If you have not seen the first movies, there is no point in jumping in and trying to watch the third. If you have had the opportunity to see the first two then there is no point in jumping in and watching the third! I will not lie number, 1 was awesome making you believe it was based on a real movie and real footage is what gave this movie the edge, then finding out it was fake. Holy smokes! Fell for it shame on me! Trying to create another one and expecting it to be scary, shame on you!

March Must See Movie

Boondock Saints

BOONDOCK SAINTS: Evil shall flourish when good men do nothing! Feeling that they are doing God’s will, two Catholic brothers from Boston set out to kill everyone in this Reservoir Dogs-style vigilante thriller. Brothers Conner and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) take to performing their divine duty against the Russian mob. This cult classic is an absolute must see! We shall flow a river forth to thee and teaming with souls shall it ever be.

Classic Movies Of The Month

Apes PLANET OF THE APES: An astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. This movie crossed so many boundaries for its time; evolution, slavery, and women's rights.
INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS 1956: The alien (read ‘Communist’) dehumanization and takeover of an entire community by large seed pods) that replicated and replaced human beings. And it told of the heroic struggle of one determined man, a small town doctor (McCarthy), to vainly combat and quell the deadly, indestructible threat. The ipsychological sci-fi film was re-made three times checking out the original.
The African Queen: A tale of two companions with mismatched, “opposites attract” personalities who develop a love affair as they travel together downriver in Africa around the start of World War I. With two leads; Humphrey Bogart an unshaven, drinking and smoking captain of a cranky tramp steamer and; Katharine Hepburn a prissy and proper, but imperious and unorthodox African missionary spinster and for director Huston.

Minimum Wage Pain

Posted on March 7, 2012 by admin in Commentary

Gary Meyers

As a person with a well grounded understanding of economics, it concerns me to read an economic story which is intentionally misleading or harmful to the future of our country. I believe this happens because much of the media is not well schooled in economics which makes them victims of politicians who foist erroneous liberal ideas. A perfect example is the local positive media coverage of the mandatory hike in the Arizona minimum wage. Superficially, politicians see this as a quick method to get votes of the young and the ignorant. However, with just five minutes of research, any journalist can find reams of evidence that hiking the minimum wage does severe damage to the same people the politicians pretend to help.

I recall one of the first actions of the newly elected Pelosi/Reid Congress in early 2007. They bragged about how their actions to raise the national minimum wage will help Americans secure a “living wage”, while others were trying to deny workers their “rights” to higher pay. The actual result? The unemployment rate among minority, uneducated, and young workers are now at record highs, with no end in sight. The new Congress intentionally ignored all the research on their desks which proved they were harming their own voters.

For example: From the Joint Economic Committee, US Congress 1996: “The voices clamoring for a minimum wage hike are getting ever louder. Proponents argue that the current wage level does not provide an adequate incentive for work. Also, they argue that an increase in the minimum wage will have only a very minor impact on jobs. These arguments are not grounded in fact. The impact of raising the minimum wage has been studied since its inception. All credible research has come to the same conclusion: raising the minimum wage hurts the poor. It takes away jobs, keeps people on welfare, and encourages high-school students to drop out. Policy makers should be clear on the consequence of higher minimum wages.

It is a political measure that plays to a misunderstanding of the impact of higher minimum wages. The future of the American economy depends on a correct understanding of the causes of prosperity. For too long, attempts to relieve poverty have been misguided. Raising the minimum wage is a wrong-headed solution that will deprive young, poor Americans of an opportunity to improve their economic situation.” This above Congressional report was from sources including the American Economic Review, National Bureau of Economic Research: Cambridge, MA, 1995.

For something even more recent and more local, this is from ASU, 2009: “[My students are] always surprised when I tell them that the minimum wage hurts them,” says Boyes, a W. P. Carey professor of economics who explores the minimum wage in class. “They always say something like, ‘Oh thank God for the minimum wage — I just wish it was $20-anhour so I could get more money.’ And I have to tell them, ‘No, if it was $20-an-hour, you wouldn’t have more money. Because you wouldn’t have a job.'”

Economists rarely agree on anything, Boyes said, but when it comes to the federal minimum wage, there is near-unanimous agreement that these wage floors stunt growth, hamper businesses’ ability to compete and, maybe most importantly, make it more difficult for low-wage, lows killed workers (most especially teenagers) to find entry-level jobs. Yet despite the fact that nearly all the evidence suggests that it is a drag on the economy and a burden on American workers, the minimum wage has survived in this country (and many other Western nations) for decades. The reason is simple, says Boyes: Politics.” Once again, if journalists genuinely worked to keep our politicians more honest, we’d all be better off.

Bar Review

McKee's

You know when you were growing up, there was always this one house in your neighborhood where all the kids hung out and the parents were simply “cool”. They had an uncanny ability to make each person feel so at-home. You could relax there and have a good time… Well, word on the street is that’s the vibe you’re going to get at McKee’s Pub and Grill. Everyone I talk to tells me they frequent McKee’s for the same three reasons; it’s unpretentious, they feel at home; the food is really good.

Aesthetically , McKee’s could be anybody’s hometown Irish Pub. The place is dimly lit, with beer lights and various liquor signs glowing. Four leaf clovers ,of course, prominently appear everywhere. There are pool tables, dartboards and even weekly trivia game signs handwritten and posted looking for participants. The bartender when I was there had that natural pretty girl next door look, and greeted me with a subtle smile. I order a Guinness and she asks if I want a slow pour? I immediately reply yes, and within minutes receive my beer with an impression of a clover on the head. The guy next to me at the bar greets me as wel,l with a nod and a smile. I easily settle in. Around me people were involved in conversations or some just doing their own thing, but I couldn’t tune out the greetings shouted across the bar and all of the shared laughter, almost as if everyone in there knew each other. Amidst all of the background goings on, I finally spot the boss. It was no easy chore. I visually combed the joint, when first walking in, without noticing anyone who might appear as the owner.

McKee's

She was sitting at the bar, in a sweatshirt and jeans, blending in like everyone else. That’s her thing. She wants to be one of the crowd, and truly is. Vicky is one of the locals and has been working for this establishment since it used to be a place called Kanuk’s, over 18 yrs ago! She took possession of the bar in 2008. Even though her and her husband, Ranj, are not related to the others working there, Vicki says “The success of McKee’s comes from running this place as a family, Ranj at the door, Randy in the Kitchen, Rita at the bar and everyone one else working here is part of our team”.

Vicki lets out a laugh when telling the story of a flustered customer at the bar. She’s looking straight into my eyes as she speaks, you get the sense that she is a strong woman ” So this guy is telling me, Yeah ,I know the owner, and when I see him I ‘m gonna tell him about you! Vicky’s reply, “Really? When you find the owner, you tell’em I’m lookin’ for him too!”

When given a compliment , Vicky is modest and replies,” I just treat this place like it has my name on it. In McKees, everyone is equal, whether you’re a millionaire or homeless.” Outside of the food people have come to love here (like the tasty and hot quick soup and sandwich for those of you on a work schedule) McKee’s is known for cooking a feast for all on the holidays. That would be seven turkeys and over one hundred pounds of mashed potatoes! It is shared with whomever walks through their doors, even when the economy was at its worst.

McKee's

Although almost anything goes at McKee’s, Vicky has this unspoken code of conduct that folks seem to understand. She knows when to draw the line and is nobody’s fool. If you cross the line, even as a customer ,you’re out for thirty days. People understand and appreciate a set of boundaries. How else would a lady run two pubs! That’s right, Vicki has another McKee’s in South Dakota, her home state, just 17 miles outside of Sturgis! I am beginning to realize that I am in the presence of a true matriarch. Vicky’s got her doors open to all, making McKee’s a home away from home.

Come Celebrate St . Pattys Day With Us!

Looking to sink your teeth into some Saint Patty’s Day splendor? Where else would you rather be than your hometown McKee’s Pub! McKee’s is more than ready for March 17th, where they will have extended their premises to seat over one hundred additional patrons outside for their busiest day of the year! Can’t you just smell the home made steaming hot corned beef and cabbage cooking as you sip your favorite green beer! This year, they are prepared to almost double the three hundred and forty pounds of corned beef and cabbage they sold last year! Don’t be Foolish, be Irish and come to McKee’s.

Laces Out!!!

Well sports fans, the big day has come and gone. Did anyone see it coming? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Super Bowl 46 was played between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants on February 5th. It was a rematch of a prior Super Bowl and not that exciting of a game, to be honest. Eli Manning played pretty good football. Brady lost it, or did Welker drop the pass? Could Brady pull of the 4th quarter win? The answer is no. The Giants won, and nobody was excited because we were all out shotgunning beers or something else more exciting than watching this game. I asked a Tom Brady fan for his take on the game, and this is part of our conversation:

Me: So we have the back story for Super Bowl 46. Brady’s redemption. Not talking about Eli because he’s always in the shadow. How was the feeling of the game before the 4th quarter?

Oz: It’s like if u got your ass kicked on the playground one day and 3 years later you see that kid again and scrap, it’s even more personal because he whooped your ass the first time when everybody said he couldn’t.

Me: So the game was boring, and the commercials sucked. Good thing we had beer. The 4th quarter is what we were all waiting for. Could Brady run his offense and pull out that last second, miracle drive to win the Super Bowl and be everybody’s hero??

Heads Down

Oz: I felt confident in the 4th quarter and knew it was going down. They interviewed Brady before the game and they asked him would he rather be up with one minute and have Eli with the ball OR be DOWN with a minute to go with him having the ball. He immediately said, “I want the ball.” I think he even knew it was coming down to that.

Me: So you think the Pats as a team were the cause for “Bradying” rather than the man himself?

Oz: Ultimately from just a fan of the game, the entire team should be Bradying after that loss. I mean Brady played well. Did he have the best game of his career? No. But he played well enough to give his team a shot. I think at one point he completed like 13 passes in a row without his main threat. The game wasn’t all that great. No spectacular plays that will live in infamy besides Welker’s drop come to mind. It was just another excuse to eat finger foods and consume lots of beer while wearing your favorite player’s jersey. Not to mention, the obligatory halftime football show. You all go out feeling like you’re making moves like Gronkowski but end up pulling your quad. Smooth… Next time, we’ll discuss the NFL draft coming up which means football season isn’t as far off as it sounds.
