Top 10 Wildest Spring Break Destinations Via Codemagazine.com

Spring Break

You don’t have to tune into MTV Spring Break to know that for many college students, the annual rite revolves around booze, beaches and babes.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada
Home of gambling, Strip Clubs and anything else you can buy with money!

2. Key West
During the high spring break season, open container laws are not enforced. Dont miss the clothing optional Garden Of Eden Bar.

3. South Padre Island, Texas
How can it get any wilder? A beach that exist for the soul purpose of having wild parties!

4. Daytona Beach, Florida
According to Orlando Sentinel, Daytona Beach has become the undisputed party capital for underage drinkers.

5. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
South Myrtle (the wilder side) is run by three defining places: the beach, Broadway on the Beach and the Strip Clubs.

6. Miami Beach, Florida
The Jersey Shore went here. Plus, it’s one of two places where you can wear a shiny button shirt, rent a lambo and wear white pants.

7. Panama City Beach, Florida
Take a trip down to the beach in your pick up and make sure to have lawn chairs and coolers in the back. Only poor people walk
here.

8. Fort Myers, Florida
Head for Lane Kai, an older run down area of the beach that is perfect for hosting the daily “booty contest”.

9. Lake Havasu City, Arizona

10. San Diego, California
Most of the locals head to other destinations for spring break, but that just means the people left partying here are extra trashy.

Under The Influence

Posted on March 6, 2012 by admin in Bar Buzz

Influence

The glamorous ladies of Sex and the City prefer cosmopolitans, James Bond wants his martini shaken and not stirred, and the bride and groom are toasted with champagne. Alcohol is a part of American culture and is often a part of holiday celebrations, such as St. Patrick’s Day. Who has not had a green beer to celebrate?

How does alcohol affect a person?
Alcohol is absorbed in the stomach and small intestines into the bloodstream. It is broken down by substances in the liver in a really slow process (about one drink per hour) leaving the majority of the alcohol to circulate through the body. Alcohol causes dizziness, talkativeness, slurred speech, impaired judgment and coordination, and memory loss. In large quantities, it can also cause nausea, vomiting, coma, and death.

Why does alcohol affect people differently?
Alcohol affects people differently and is influenced by a variety of factors such as: age, gender, race, weight, fitness level, food consumed, how quickly the alcohol was consumed, use of drugs or prescription medications, and family or previous history of alcohol problems.

What are the health benefits of moderate alcohol use?
When consumed in moderation, alcohol can have health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, gallstones, and diabetes. Moderation is defined as one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men. Drinking in excess can have the opposite effects. This is not a case where the more, the merrier.

What is a “hangover?”
A hangover is the unfortunate morning after-effect of drinking excessively. Symptoms include irritability, decreased concentration, anxiety, sensitivity to light and sound, sweating, headache, nausea, thirst, dizziness, vertigo, shakiness, rapid heartbeat, and fatigue. There are many factors that contribute to these symptoms including dehydration as alcohol is a diuretic. Also, alcohol triggers an inflammatory response, irritates the stomach lining, causes blood vessels to expand, causes blood sugar to fall, and is a depressant.

How do you treat a “hangover?”
Time is the only true cure for a hangover. However, there are things to help make it more comfortable in the meantime. Drink a lot of water or fruit juice and have a snack. Dry carbohydrates such as toast or crackers may boost blood sugar and settle the stomach. Soup can help replenish lost salt and potassium. Foods and drinks with sugar (fructose) may help to burn the alcohol faster. A low dose of an over-the-counter pain medication may help with the headache.  However, pain relievers containing aspirin may irritate the stomach and those containing acetaminophen (Tylenol) may damage the liver if combined with large amounts of alcohol. Vitamins B and C have been thought to also help the symptoms. It may also help to eat first, take it slowly, choose alcohols with fewer congeners such as vodka or gin, and drink water between drinks.

What about greasy food or the “hair of the dog?”
Eating the big, greasy breakfast (or lunch by the time you wake up) does not really ease the hangover. As for the “hair of the dog,” it may slightly numb the pain but it is only really prolonging the inevitable. So, the moral of the story is if you have too much alcohol tonight, you will probably pay for it tomorrow! Make sure you stock up on water and crackers!

Red Onion Bar

Posted on February 11, 2012 by admin in Bar Buzz

Red Onior Bar

If you’re looking for a new favorite bar in town, you’ll want to check out the R.O. Bar @ The Red Onion, downtown at Arnold Plaza. David Rome, bar manager, was quick to point out that this bar is unique: it’s not your typical loud bar, “We really wanted to go for a sophisticated, upscale bar: think your wine and cheese sort of thing. Owner Steve Van Ella is looking to emulate that classy downtown Scottsdale look and feel.” With upscale food from The Red Onion, combined with quality beers and liquors, the R.O. Bar has managed to add a touch of sophistication to the local bar scene.

Every last detail of the bar interior was designed and built by owner Van Ella—from the bar right down to the light fixtures—adding the owner’s touch and vision for revamping Arnold Plaza. The R.O. Bar provides at-the-bar and table seating. There’s also room for casual outside dining and drinking, taking advantage of the typically perfect Havasu weather. Add in planned art shows and events and it’s clear to see that Van Ella’s vision for the R.O. Bar is rapidly becoming a reality.

Already gaining a reputation for their famous Bloody Mary’s, the bar offers a variety of tap and bottle beers including local Mudshark brews, notably Full Moon and Scorpion. “A full line of Three Olive Vodka including Cake, Cherry, and OR-G, complimented by high-end Tequilas like Silver Cruz and Don Julio are sure to satisfy the most discriminating pallet”, noted Rome.

Happy Hour menus feature a variety of flavorful appetizers as well as ½ off drink specials. Meal specials include all-you-can-eat fish as well as mouth-watering prime rib. Fine dining and excellent drink selections all wrapped up in the upscale elegance that you won’t find anywhere else in town makes for a memorable night out at the R.O. Bar @ The Red Onion.

Great Food and Drinks, I’m There! The R.O. Bar @ The Red Onion features an upscale bar scene with excellent drink selections and fine dining at reasonable prices. Located at 2013 McCulloch Blvd. at Arnold Plaza, downtown Havasu. The R.O. Bar is open 4 p.m. to close Wed-Sat. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, 7 a.m. T o 2 p.m. And 4-8 p.m.

Red Army Captains

Lake Havasu City Indie Rock

Red Army Captains

We Sat down with Rob Hennings 3 and Ian Goold of local up and coming band Red Army Captains to ask them a few questions. If you were on main street for New Years, you had the opportunity to see these guys rock the night out and bring in the new year.

How do you handle the 7 – 10 split?
ROB:
I usually just curse god for cursing me with such terribly low bowling averages.

So I heard you guys rocked Main Street on New Years. Care to comment?
IAN:
We had fun and all thirty people that came to the stage we played seemed to enjoy it.

If you could play a show with any musician dead or alive who wold it be?
ROB:
That is a really tough one, I am going to have to get back to you. After the interview rob came back in and said he would play with
John Taylor from Duran Duran. The next day he called in to say he would rather play with Paul Simonon from The Clash. (Someone has commitment issues I think)

IAN: Any artist would be iconic but if given the choice I would say Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation, John Lennon or Paul McCartney.

How long have you been playing together?
We have been playing together for around 3 or 4 years.

What can we look forward to in the future from you guys?
Right now we are just in writing mode. Then we will be working on some out of town shows.

Nipple clamps, good or bad?
ROB:
probably bad, never tried them though
IAN: Bad news!

Who inspires you the most as far as influencing your writing?
ROB:
People, places and things

IAN: I write my own stuff and don’t really listen to other music.

Where does the name come from?
IAN:
The pre-occupation of the cold war, and what a farce it was.

Brewing Beer At Home

Posted on February 9, 2012 by admin in Bar Buzz

R.O. Bar

By Rawley R. Macias: Do you appreciate good beer? Ever wonder if you could it make at home? If so, you are in luck; brewing beer at home can be as easy or complex as you want. A person can get into home brewing for as little as $100. Online homebrew stores like Morebeer.com make it easy by offering basic startup kits. They usually include a 3-5 gallon pot to heat the beer in, a 5 gallon glass or plastic vessel to ferment the beer in, a handheld hydrometer to measure alcohol content, bottling equipment, and a step-by-step instruction guide. Once you get going, home brewing kits can be upgraded to suit your own brewing style.

A delicious beer typically consists of five ingredients: grain to give the beer its malty backbone, hops to add some bitterness and aroma, yeast to convert the sugars to alcohol, water, and time. Homebrew supply shops offer kits for all styles of beer. Patience is also a virtue with homebrewing as a typical brew takes about three weeks before it is ready to enjoy. The process can be divided into three main events: the brew day, the fermentation period, and the bottling day. The process starts with the brew day which usually takes anywhere from 2-5 hours to make the wort. Wort is the sweet liquid produced from the malted grain which will later be fermented by the yeast. Once the wort is produced, it is cooled, transferred to a fermentation vessel, and brewer’s yeast is added. And then you wait…for approximately 2 weeks for the yeast to consume the sugar in the wort producing the alcohol. Once the fermentation period is complete, it is time to move onto the bottling day. Bottling day typically consists of transferring the fermented beer into individual bottles and introducing a small amount of corn sugar. The corn sugar provides a little food for the yeast to consume to create carbon dioxide which carbonates the beer. After about a week of sitting in the bottle, the beer is ready to refrigerate and enjoy. It is that easy!

Most homebrewers start off with a simple system but often upgrade and individualize it as time goes on. Brewing beer at home is a great way to impress your friends and tailor the beer to your taste buds. Cheers and happy brewing!

One Tequila, Two Tequila

Posted on February 6, 2012 by admin in Bar Buzz

Life Beyond Patron

Agave Plant

Patron tequila is perhaps the best marketed product in tequila history. That’s why you know the name! The Patron Spirits Company was founded in 1989 and has become every distillery’s success model. Those who start their tequila journey with Jose Cuervo often shift towards Patron (a natural transition if you ask me.) Both are well known, have large marketing budgets, and appeal to younger audiences.

I am here to tell you that your tequila experience should not be limited to Jose Cuervo and Patron. If so, you are definitely missing out. In my opinion, there’s more marketing than tequila in Patron. Just to be clear, Patron is NOT bad, it’s just not the best you can get for the price in my opinion. The flip side of this is that it’s EVERYWHERE. Bars, nightclubs, retail stores, your friend’s liquor cabinet… trust me, it’s there. If an establishment is going to have only a few tequila’s, they will have Patron, it’s that marketing thing again. All in all, Patron’s a safe bet, but don’t let the price fool you into thinking it’s the best.  Soooo… the whole purpose of this section of the publication is to introduce you to the afterlife. So here we go. First lets go through some tequila basics and then we will continue with some of my favorite picks (life after Patron:)

TEQUILA TYPES
With close to 1000 Tequila brands to choose from, it helps to know the different types of Tequilas and the categories they fall into. Strict regulations on labeling assist the consumer in determining the type of the spirit, where it was produced, and the term it was aged (if any). The main two types of Tequila are first split into two categories, 100% Blue Agave, and Tequila Mixto (Mixed). Mixto Tequila contains a minimum of 51% Blue Agave, and the remaining 49% from other sugars. The additional products allowed in Mixto Tequilas are caramel color, oak extract flavoring, glycerin, and sugar based syrup. Since January 6, 2006. Common brands of Mixtos are Jose Cuervo, Sauza and El Jimador. By reading the label on the bottle you can tell which classification it is in, as all Tequila that is made from 100% Blue Agave will say “Tequila 100% de agave” or “Tequila 100% puro de agave”. All other Mixto Tequila labels will only read “Tequila.” Got it?

The above two categories of Tequila are then divided into the following five types of Tequila and are labelled as such:

Tequila Silver – Blanco – Plata – White – Platinum
This is the Blue Agave spirit in its purest form. It is clear and typically un-aged, where the true flavors and the intensity of the Agave are present, as well as the natural sweetness. It can be bottled directly after distillation, or stored in stainless steel tanks to settle for up to 4 weeks. This tequila can be the harshest in taste, but can also be irresistibly powerful for all those who dare to try it. There’s no better way to fully experience the essence of pure blue agave… just don’t expect any subtleties from it. It can mix well, but hardcore tequila aficionados will always drink it straight up.

Tequila Gold (- Joven – Oro) blahh
Gold Tequila is typically a Mixto, where colorants and flavorings have been added prior to bottling. These “young and adulterated” Tequilas are less expensive and are the common “well” brands used for “mixed drinks”. This type wont be talked about in the future because well….they are wells. Well tequila is well tequila. Jaurez, Pepe Lopez and Montezuma are the local wells…. YAWN

Tequila Reposado
A Reposado Tequila is the first stage of “rested and aged” and are sometimes referred to as such. The Tequila is aged in American or French oak wood barrels or storage tanks between 2 months and 11 months. The spirit takes on a golden hue and the taste becomes a good balance between the Agave and wood flavors. Some Tequilas are aged in used bourbon / whiskey, cognac, or wine barrels, and will inherit unique flavors and color from the previous spirit. With a reposado, you are dealing with a very versatile yet subtle combination. A good reposado retains enough of the agave punch of a blanco but the 2 to 11 month aging in the oak barrel give it a richer more sophisticated woody flavor. By the way, reposados are the most popular type of tequila, since it’s both a sipper and a mixer. You can never go wrong with a good reposado!

Tequila Añejo (extra aged)
Tequila can then be classified as an “Añejo” after aging for at least one year. This longer aging process darkens the Tequila to an Amber color, and the flavor become much smoother, richer, and more complex. Anejo tequila is sought after like a fine cigar. Not everyone can handle (or afford) a premium anejo. Think of anejo tequila as a high-class aged spirit such as a good bourbon or scotch. Since it must remain in oak barrels for 1 to 3 years it provides a more complex flavor than the reposado. A good Anejo is top-class material. You’ll feel more elegant yourself just by sipping it. Swirl it in the snifter, let it breath and experience the change. Anejo tequila should not be mixed with any other ingredients. If, however, you cannot resist the urge to prepare a premium margarita, make sure the ingredients you DO use are top-notch as well. The damn thing’s been aged for years! Don’t go using a cheap mix…

Tequila Extra Añejo (ultra aged)
A new classification was added in the summer of 2006, labeling any Tequila aged more than 3 years, an “Extra Añejo”. With this extended amount of aging, the Tequila becomes much darker, more of a Mahogany color, and is so rich that it becomes difficult to distinguish it from other quality aged spirits. These Extra Añejo’s are extremely smooth and complex. Some can be compared to a fine bourbon or coniac.

The CASA NOBLE tri-fecta
This is one distillery that got all three (Silver, Repo and Anejo) of their types right. I won’t even talk about their single barrel or 5 year anejos (if you can find them) other than to say that they are awesome, just the basic three.

tri-fecta

A PARTING TIP:
Drink good tequila from a small snifter or wine glass, never a shot glass. For one reason, the snifter lets the tequila breath and delivers the “nose” portion of the fine tequila sipping experience. But more importantly, a shot glass limits the pour. You can only put so much in a shot glass. Think about it!
